Build A Clock: Intro To Machine Tools- WS-204

Build A Clock: Intro To Machine Tools- WS-204
This class is an introduction to machining and materials. The classroom includes a complete set of tools and machines for each student. Students will "build" their own working clock using the gearing and escapement of a modern German clock movement (Regula AM44). Using the Sherline lathe and milling machine, this conversion will familiarize students with many aspects of machining and allow them to complete the project in the short time available. The skills taught are applicable to any field requiring micro machining and the abundant "hands-on" time will familiarize students with machine tools and their operation. Accuracy is basic to precision work and we will use the micrometer and caliper to take measurements to aid in our work. Also covered is basic metallurgy and the making of custom tooling.

Upon completing the course the student should be able to:

  • Read and use, both English and metric  calipers and micrometers
  • Convert from one system of measurement to the other
  • Identify common metals and uses of their various alloys
  • Harden and temper tool steel
  • Make several useful, small tools
  • Properly use saws, files and other basic tools
  • Safely use a torch
  • Use the Sherline lathe and accurately turn to dimension
  • Use the Sherline milling machine to accurately preform various operations
